The Third age was the 4th LOTR game to be released on the Xbox, and took a different direction from the safe hack/slash format that was all the rage at the time.

This game is a traditional turn-based RPG, and plays out alongside the main trilogy story. most of the story is played out in voiceovers alongside movie clips from the films.

You play the roll of  Berethor, a captain in the Citadel Guard of Gondor, travelling to Rivendell to find Boromir at the behest of Denethor. As you progress through the game, you will visit many familiar places/battles & cross paths with the famous fellowship. You even get to fight alongside them in key boss battles (Example: Team with Gandalf to battle the Balrog in the mines of Moria)

The locations & level designs are not the best, mostly drab rinse & repeat point A to point B layouts, but it works. does a great job of capturing the Tolkien universe and pulling you in.

I don't really need to go into the Characters, they're all standard LOTR presets, and didn't really attach to any of them, but that doesn't hurt the game in my opinion. I found myself sticking with the same 3 characters through the whole game as any new additions don't bring anything new or exciting

My only gripe is the boss battles, near the end they just rely on status ailments & cheap tactics to pad out the battles
